The Matlock Mural project from 2015
•When was Matlock last nestling on the edge of a tropical lagoon, with its peace punctuated only by the occasional volcanic eruption?
•Did the wealth of the Chatsworth Estate really come from Scotland?
•When were the first baths established in Matlock and what is the source of its thermal waters?
•Where was Matlock’s secret intelligence HQ in WW2?
•How many hydros were there in Matlock and how many Matlocks are there?
You can find the answers to these and lots of other questions on a new website developed by Matlock Civic Association (matlockcivicassociation.org.uk). Matlock Civic Association (MCA) has as its aim “Conserving Matlock's Heritage; Influencing Matlock's Future”. To bring the amazing story of Matlock’s history, geography, natural history and architecture to a wider audience, MCA has launched this website.
•It records the projects that MCA has been carrying out for the past 40 years
•Describes work that MCA is currently undertaking to preserve Matlock’s long and rich heritage and improve its future environment
•Explains how the Matlock area has evolved into what it is today, the influential people, the industries and natural forces that have wrought that change, from the origins of the Matlock Gorge to the legacy of the many spectacular buildings and hydros across the town
•It tells Matlock’s story from its beginnings, through its role in the World Wars, right up to the floods that have hit the area again recently and contains information for both residents and tourists.
