Wirksworth Gardens Open to the Public

Wirksworth Hidden Courtyards and Gardens weekend takes place on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th June. The gardeners of Wirksworth have had to keep their garden gates firmly shut for the past two years, but are delighted to be able to finally open their courtyards and gardens to the public. Many gardeners spent much of Lockdown developing their outdoor spaces so this year visitors should expect some changes and surprises as they wander along the Open Gardens Trail which this year will feature more than 25 courtyards and gardens. As visitors wander along the Trail they will see the history of this intriguing town reflected in the cottages, ginnels and architecture and will catch views of parts of Wirksworth rarely seen. Many of the town’s shops and businesses will be open and in some of the gardens refreshments, cakes, and plants will be on offer. The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway are keen for visitors to see the flowers and plants on their railway stations and are offering Open Garden ticket-holders a reduction on EVR’s Day Rover ticket so visitors could spend a few hours wandering around the gardens and then take a train journey along the Ecclesbourne Valley. The grand finale to the weekend will be an informal open air summer concert by the Wirksworth Community Orchestra on the Sunday at 4 p.m. in the town’s Memorial Gardens.

This year the Wirksworth Open Gardens team are trying to be more environmentally friendly so flower-pots will replace the plastic signs and balloons used to indicate which gardens are open. Over the years the money from ticket and cake sales has raised tens of thousands of pounds for charities and local groups so buying a ticket helps to invest back into the community life of the town. Gardens will be open from 12 midday to 5 p.m. on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th June and tickets £4 adults, £3.50 concessions, under 16s free can be bought on arrival.
