Grindleford Primary School received an unexpected visit from a former pupil, David Stanbridge, who attended the school in the late 1930s. Mr Stanbridge was visiting the area he grew up in and reminiscing about his childhood spent at the school, after living away for most of his adult life. He is now 96 but the stories he could recall about his time at school more than 80 years ago were incredible.
Mr Stanbridge talked staff through the 1930s layout, including the old Victorian entrance and where he sat as a pupil. The stories he shared astounded all the staff, especially when he spoke about the windows being boarded up during the Second World War and children wearing their gas masks during assemblies. An absolutely amazing experience for all the staff and pupils and one that will be recorded and used during our history lessons.
