BAKEWELL V E DAY CELEBRATIONS

The events in Bakewell to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day were a great success. Around 90 local school children were amongst those who gathered at 9am on the 8th. They laid poppy crosses around the WW2 memorial as the Kings Proclamation was read. They also had the chance to be photographed with D Day veteran, Albert Keir.

The street party and quiz at the Town Hall was sold out, and a great evening of music, singing, eating and quizzing was had by all.

At 9.30pm everyone sang with the nation, ‘I vow to thee my country’, and the National Anthem.

A beacon was lit on the golf course and the spire of the parish church was turned red.

Bakewell marked the occasion well and should be proud.

Thanks to all who were involved in the poppy trail, and to the shops who decorated their windows so nicely.
