Baslow WI Darlings

Mark Dawson, Food Historian – “Henderson's Relish”

“A Saucy Tale” Mark made us laugh, his easy going but informative talk inspired questions and revealed a local loyalty for “Hendos”. He may even have inspired a trip down memory lane to Sheffield's No 41 Leavygreave Road.

Stoney Middleton Boot Factory with Joyce Lennon and Libs Slattery

Hidden away in the heart of the village, time stands still; this is where Libs grandfather started making steel toe-capped boots for the local quarry workers and where Libs and her skilled team produce bespoke leather boots carrying on the tradition. I don't know what it feels like to brush against the same ancient walls as your grandfather and handle the same 'lasts' but it seems an envious experience to me. Some of the machinery being used today is over a hundred years old and as good as the day it was bought, it's repetitive sound instilling an industrious atmosphere, and, together with the distinctive smell of freshly tanned leather it is, as I said, as if time has stood still. A unique experience.

“WI Kindness Day” with Ann McPhie and Jane Walker

Tasked with bringing a little kindness into the lives of others, we raided our gardens and took baskets of fresh flowers to Baslow Car Park and Baslow Sports Field. Each bouquet carried an explanation of “Kindness Day” and was gifted with the intention of making someone's day happier but actually it “made ours” seeing the pleasure and gratitude of the recipients.

Charlie's with

Kath Smith

One of our favourite lunch spots, always delicious.

Walk – Litton to Tideswell Well Dressings, Lunch in Litton, Litton School's Maypole Dancing

with Hazel Bell

Glorious. The school boys wore flat caps and waistcoats, the girls full length pinafores, the Band comprised teachers, parents and villagers; creating a spectacular Maypole dancing afternoon – even the sun shone.

Lorna's In Charge

I know because I was still chatting to Alison Haynes when I should have been sat down and I got “called out”. Again!
