This year Froggatt and District Horticultural Society will celebrate 90 years with their 79th village show on Saturday afternoon, 23rd August
When the society was founded in 1935 growing your own vegetables and plants was something of a necessity as well as a hobby. In the small village communities, if you wanted fresh produce you had to do it yourself or exchange with a local grower. Cars were a rarity and public transport only slightly better than it is today!
Growing was more of a way of life and gardeners were keen to demonstrate their superior skills by growing bigger and better produce than their friends and neighbours.
Annual horticultural shows became a regular feature in many local communities. Sadly some have ‘lost their roots’ and disappeared with modern lifestyles. But many still do survive and will hopefully begin to flourish again as we live longer and enjoy more leisure time.
The good news is you don’t need to be an expert to take part. At Froggatt Show there are classes available for all levels of ability, with novice classes like ‘Growing a Potato Crop In a Bucket’ to the ‘Master Gardener’ section or ‘Junior’ sections with free entry
If gardening is not your thing and you don’t like muck under your fingernails – Flower Arrangements Photography Art/Craftwork Baking and Wine as well as Rider and Pony sections are open for anyone to enter at minimal cost. Or you can simply come along on Saturday afternoon, 23rd August to enjoy the atmosphere of a traditional village show. Listen to Hathersage Brass Band whilst enjoying home made cakes from the tea tent and visit the marquee and admire the range of exhibits inside. Vintage cars and small steam engines will be on the outfield, you can grab a bargain at the popular book stall or try your hand at the coconut shy. Our younger visitors can enjoy hook-a-duck and hoopla. Children have free entry and will be entertained this year by Mark’s Magic Kingdom. Stall holders offering plants and craftwork will also be present.
Hopefully we can generate more participation and interest to keep this village tradition going for the next 90 years
Registration for entries is at Froggatt Chapel on Wednesday 20th August, 7pm- 9pm. Entry forms are available online at www.froggattshow.org or by emailing info@froggattshow.org
In order to deliver The show we would welcome any assistance with ‘setting up’ on Friday afternoon, 22nd August as well as during and after the show on Saturday 23rd August.
