Last year, Matlock Luncheon Club commemorated its 60th anniversary. The Club began as a group of like-minded women who met for lunch and a chance to network. Many current members have been involved in the club for decades. This year, the Committee has sadly closed the Club’s accounts. The final lunch was on Thursday 11th July at the Peak Edge Hotel; it was enjoyed by over 60 members and guests in a true celebration of good food and friendship. The end of an era.
Local author Shirley Mann entertained the members with a presentation about her journey from journalist to author. She discovered that her mother had been in the WWAF and trained as a wireless operator which gave Shirley an insight into how World War II had changed the lives and expectations of so many women. Shirley realized that there were stories of courageous women that needed telling. Her novels are carefully researched and she has been fortunate to interview many notable women whose stories are embedded in her novels. Her sixth novel is about to be published and she will be holding a book signing event at Scarthin Books on 18th August – everyone is invited.
