The changeover to our new President from 1st July took place at our club meeting on 2nd July and John Hopkins took the helm from John Craike – and Tom Marshall became the Vice-President for the year.

We also had the opportunity to welcome a new member to the club – Naeem Anjam who was formally introduced to the club and the Rotary worldwide organisation.

Lead Mining in Derbyshire – and Youth Leadership Training

Our speaker on 18th June was Suzanne Porter who is the first lady Steward of the Derbyshire Barmote court and told us all about the history of the courts which are still full courts legally and meet annually at both Wirksworth for the Duchy of Lancaster and at Chatsworth for the Duke of Devonshire.

We also had Martin along with Nell and Olivia from Lady Manners' who gave an update from the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) May weekend which the two girls had been selected by the club and school to attend and also an update on the current school’s Green project. A very good gathering as we had over 20 at lunch that day.

The annual excursion to Carsington Sailing Club was on 11th June for the Fun Day Sailability with some 15 pupils from Lady Manners’ School in Bakewell in our club boats. We provided judges for the new inter-house junior school debate between four teams on 1st July and will again judge the 6th form debate later in the month.

Future planned events include a trip to the Stoney Middleton Boot Factory followed by Lunch at The Cupola on 23rd July and a visit to the Buxton Opera House in August during the annual Gilbert and Sullivan festival which one of our members is involved.
