President’s Charity presentation to Ashgate Hospice
John Craike made a presentation of £500 to Adele Taylor from Ashgate Hospice as the charity had been chosen for his presidential year 2024/25. Adele joined our meeting at The Rutland Arms, Bakewell on 20th August to update us on the charity – which is ever more reliant on fund-raising as public funding has decreased. Only 15 of the 21 available beds are currently in use. Adele’s late husband and father both spent their last days at the hospice – and she, along with her mother and children are part of the sponsored Ashgate skydive on Saturday 6th September.
Beijing to St Petersburg Travels
Club member Evelyn-Rita Hickin entertained the club at the evening meeting at the Rutland Arms on 27th August. She gave a detailed presentation on her 5 ½ week trip which used both the rail network through China, Mongolia and Russia, combined with a week’s trek through Mongolia, along with all the familiar tourist sites – Tiananmen and Red Squares, 40m Genghis Khan statue near Ulaanbaatar and the spectacular Tsar palaces of St Petersburg. Rita also covered many personal anecdotes both amusing and detailed.
Club Awards Outstanding Contributions from Two Members
At the club lunchtime meeting at the Rutland Arms, Bakewell on 20th August, President, John Hopkins gave Paul Harris Fellowship Awards (PHF) to two members for the outstanding contributions to the club. Mary Ingham for her almoner work in the club until she hung up the baton in June – through members’ sickness and health and memorable birthday presentations to members each year! And to Margie Stuckey (well-known in Bakewell for her work at the Medway Centre) for the efforts in starting up, coordinating and running our bi-monthly and highly successful Repair Café at the Methodist Church Hall. The next one is scheduled for Saturday 27th September, 10am-12.30pm.
Paul Harris Awards are the highest honour in Rotary worldwide and started in 1957 and named in recognition of the founder of Rotary – recipients include US President Jimmy Carter.
