Bakewell Royal British Legion (RBL) would like to invite all veterans and local residents, to join in or attend our two Remembrance Events.
The 11th of November each year is marked as a day of remembrance, to mark the end of World War I (WWI) in 1918. The guns fell silent at 11am on this date, which has become known as Armistice Day, or Remembrance Day.
In Bakewell, we gather in Bath Gardens, Rutland Square, Bakewell DE45 1BT at 11am on the 11th November, for a laying of wreaths. We then visit the Bakewell Cottage Nursing Home, on Butts Road, which was once the Memorial Cottage Hospital. Finally, we pay our respects at the Bakewell Cemetery War Graves, at All Saints Church.
For the convenience of working people, the closest Sunday to Armistice Day became held as Remembrance Sunday, where parades and services are held to remember our fallen service men and women. WWI was thought to be “The War to End All Wars”. Sadly, we know this was not the case, and our Armed Forces continue to serve in conflicts around the world. The Remembrance Sunday parades now provide an opportunity to remember the sacrifices made by all of our service men and women.
This year, Remembrance Sunday falls on Sunday 9th November. We will meet on the Market Square from 10.30 am, to march to Bakewell War Memorial in time for an 11 o’clock silence, and laying of wreathes. Afterwards, we continue to All Saints Church, where a religious service of remembrance will be held.
Bakewell Royal British Legion would also like to invite you to find out more about what the RBL do, and maybe consider joining Bakewell Branch.
Last year, we helped send Bakewell D-Day veteran Albert Kier to the 80th anniversary commemoration in Normandy. Sadly, we recently lost Albert, aged 100 years old. Bakewell RBL are proud to have added value to his final years.
