KIRK IRETON OPEN GARDENS REVEALS ALLON 14 AND 15 JUNE

The Derbyshire hill top village of Kirk Ireton opens its gardens and its glorious views to visitors and villagers on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 June, 1pm to 5pm.

Among the trail of 16 gardens of all shapes and sizes is 'Cashel', well known for its magnificently planted 2 acres, its wooded ravine garden and as a former National Garden Scheme venue. Visitors will find good value plant sales here.

There are well established cottage gardens, some tucked away gardens along tiny lanes which suddenly open onto views of the Ecclesbourne Valley. Two gardens are newly established or being remodelled and visitors are invited to make suggestions and contribute to the plans. Three substantial gardens are a short walk along the lanes looking over the pastures around the village and two, towards Blackwall hamlet, reveal spectacular views over Biggin towards Hulland Ward.

You will find cream teas at the village hall and tea and cakes at other gardens. On Saturday at the church there are trains, games, and making things for younger visitors. Calling in at the Barley Mow for refreshments of strawberries and cream, stop to admire the walled garden, orchard and superb vegetable production there. And on Sunday afternoon there will be local choirs singing in the pub garden.

All this for a £5 ticket for both days, under 14s free. Map guide and wristbands on sale from Kirk Ireton Community Shop, Main Street, next to The Barley Mow pub. Parking is provided free – please follow the signs. The money raised will go towards Holy Trinity Church and other local charitable projects. Expect steep gradients and narrow lanes in this small village with surprising gardens.
