MATLOCK MUSIC PRESENTS LIVE MUSIC IN THE DALES 2025-2026 LUMAS WINDS – WIND QUINTET FRIDAY 7TH NOVEMBER

Matlock Music Society continues its exciting 2025/26 season on Friday 7th November with a recital given by the Lumas Winds quintet. The group was established in 2018 and evolved through friendships formed at the National Youth Orchestra, resulting in a very strong bond between its members. The group has featured in many prestigious festivals around the UK and made its Wigmore Hall debut in 2023 and Kings Place debut in 2025. They have been described as an “effervescent wind quintet, lively in their performance style and enterprising in their choice of repertoire”.

The group comprises Beth Stone (flute), Benjamin Hartnell-Booth (French horn), Flo Plane (bassoon), Rennie Sutherland (clarinet) and Polly Bartlett (oboe).Since graduating from the RCM in 2022, Beth has performed in many different settings in the UK and Europe, winning several International competition awards. Benjamin graduated in 2022 from the Royal Academy with distinction and is currently a freelance horn player based in London performing with both orchestral and chamber groups. Flo studied at the Royal Academy and her passion for chamber music has led to performances with different groups of musicians at festivals throughout the UK. Rennie graduated from the Royal College of Music in 2022. Since graduating, he has developed his career in both orchestral and chamber music. Polly also graduated from the Royal College in 2022 where she was awarded a Master of Performance with Distinction. She now performs with many of the UK and Europe’s leading orchestras as well as several chamber music ensembles.

The group’s varied programme will include Mozart’s Serenade for Winds No.12, Hindemith’s Kleine Kammermusik Op.24, Corey de Baat’s Curious Illuminations, Schuller’s Suite for Wind Quintet, Beach’s Pastorale for Wind Quintet, Milhaud’s Cheminée du Roi René and a selection from Bernstein’s West Side Story.

Future concerts include the welcome return of Piva, the early music group, on 28th November. Full details of the 2025/26 season are given on the society’s website.

The concert is on Friday 7th November at the Wheeldon Hall, Highfields School, Lumsdale, off the Chesterfield Road, Matlock, DE4 5NA starting at 7.30pm. Tickets at £15 will be available at the door, together with season tickets at £60. Under 18s are free and students and registered job-seekers pay half-price. All seats are unreserved.
