At the February meeting of Matlock Probus Club our Vice Chairman, Mr Roger Flint, welcomed members.

Our Speaker for the meeting was Mr Paul Newsham, Forensic Expert and a man who is knowledgeable about many subjects!

His illustrated talk was “The Theatres of London”. A very fascinating insight into many of the Theatres in the West End of London and beyond. We learned that there are 38 Theatres in the West End such as The Adelphi which is situated in the Strand. This Theatre began its life as the Sans Pareil in 1806 and was renamed as the Adelphi in 1844 – it is currently showing Back to the Future the Musical. The Harold Pinter Theatre (formally known as the Comedy Theatre) opened in Panton Street in 1881, it was designed by Thomas Vardy who was involved with the Royal Albert Hall.

We heard about the history of the theatres in London and about some of the shows and people who appeared in them.

A most entertaining presentation which was followed by some of our members staying on at the Duke William for a delicious carvery lunch provided by Janet and Phil.

Matlock Probus Club is a meeting up of retired/semi-retired men and women to enjoy a social gathering – we meet on the first Thursday of the month at 10.30am at the Duke William, enjoying coffee/tea and then our presentation for the morning, followed by lunch for those who wish to stay on.

Our next meetings are:

• 5th March Victorian Country House

• 2nd April Aquaduct Cottage (Cromford Canal).

If you would like to join us, please telephone Nigel Carabine 01629 8235821 for further information.
