You could be running 5k in the stunning Peak District countryside with a group of new friends by June, even if you’ve never run before in your life.

Tideswell Running Club (TRC) is launching a free new Couch to 5k programme, starting on 1 April 2026.

TRC is known for being a friendly and inclusive club, where enjoyment of running is more important than how fast anyone goes. It has members of all ages from their 20s to their 70s, and organises a monthly ‘chip night’ where members visit the pub, eat chips and socialise after the run.

Anyone is welcome to join the new programme of Couch to 5k weekly runs, which will use a technique sometimes called ‘jeffing’, a run/walk technique developed by marathon runner Jeff Galloway in the 1970s.

The programme is being run by TRC member Sarah Owens. Sarah said, “I’m an older and steadier runner who is keen on getting people of all ages, genders and backgrounds running. I am particularly keen on encouraging people who have never run before.

“I hadn’t run since school and joined the Tideswell Running Club Couch to 5k course in 2017. It literally changed my life.

“I am still a slow runner but have completed long-distance events and have joined a new community of friendly, encouraging people.’

The programme will finish on Monday 22 June with the 5k ‘Inter Inns’ run, organised by TRC as part of Tideswell Wakes Week. It is free to participate in the Couch to 5k runs.
