The sun was shining again for the 10th Rotary Brass in the Park evening free concert during Bakewell Carnival week on 2nd July and attracted over 200 to the Recreation Ground in the Park. Initial indications are that we raised almost £1,000 from collections and from sponsors for our Community Grants award scheme, local groups, organisations and charities.
New President John Hopkins opened proceedings and introduced the entertainment for the evening with featured 25-minute slots from each of the three brass bands. Bakewell conducted by Lizzy Keeble kicked off with a range of music from Life on Mars to the classic New York New York. Helen Thurby conducting Cressbrook band featured amongst others Oh, Pretty Woman and If I were Rich Man from the hit show Fiddler on the Roof. Youlgrave Silver band were next on the stage conducted by Richard Orwin and again had an extensive playlist including the James Bond 007 Theme and the dance-along a summery Paloma Blanca.
As last year we introduced a guest group and this year we had a very popular 4-piece local band Uncle Salty UK – who gave us some very lively music, seven tunes including Here Comes the Sun and Come up and See Me.
The evening ended with a massed band finale where each brass band had contributed one item – Beyond the Sea, Death or Glory and a perfect end to a great night with Teddy Bear’s Picnic.
It is great to see the bands continuing to provide such great entertainment, but all of them need a lot more musicians to join their ranks to ensure this continues and particularly from some younger members.
Rotary also is looking to encourage new members who would like to make a contribution to the local community and enjoy our lively and friendly company!
A souvenir programme is available on request, from any member or at the Medway Centre in Bakewell. We are most grateful for all our sponsors – Longbow Venues, Franklin & Co, Archaeological Research Services, Medway Centre and Heirs & Graces – and to all the musicians – and to our very own indefatigable David Rawson and the Bakewell carnival committee.
