Henry Donovan, a pupil at Bakewell Methodist Academy, led the way in a challenging fundraising event at school. Last year, Henry was diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an auto immune condition where the body can’t make insulin. Insulin acts as a key that lets sugar from food go into the body’s cells to give them energy. In type 1 diabetes the body’s immune system accidentally attacks the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. Without insulin, sugar stays in the blood instead of going into the cells. If not treated this can be life threatening.

Henry challenged his teachers and friends to run three miles around the school grounds. The children accepted the challenge and despite some very wet weather everyone took part in three separate one mile runs throughout the day. The children showed resilience and determination – skills that Henry has shown over the last few months as he has learnt to live with a new way of life.

The children raised a fantastic £160 which will go directly to the Breakthrough T1D charity which funds groundbreaking research into finding a cure for type 1 diabetes. Henry was very grateful to his school family for supporting this special charity.
