Against a backdrop of highly polarised political opinions and posturing and division. And as Derbyshire confronts the complex issues of homelessness and anti-social behaviour (ASB), a local charity is celebrating a significant milestone with a proven blueprint for success. River Network Housing has just marked its three-year anniversary, showcasing its unique supported housing model that has effectively reduced local crime rates and transitioned long-term rough sleepers into independent living.

Backed by Derbyshire PCC Nicolle Ndiweni-Roberts, MP John Whitby, and County Council Leader Alan Graves, River Network Housing has expanded from a single site in Matlock to a comprehensive network of self-contained flats, high-quality HMOs, and therapeutic community spaces throughout the county.

Why This Story Matters

• Real solutions to crime – their targeted ASB intervention training is actively lowering neighbourhood incident rates.

• The “Move On” Model – real-life success stories of residents moving from the streets into stable, independent tenancies, complemented by local media training programs.

• Holistic integration of support and development plans – River Network Housing emphasizes a comprehensive approach, integrating mental health services, job training, and community engagement to ensure sustainable development for residents.

• Political Consensus – This initiative has garnered rare cross-party support, praised by both the local MP and the Police and Crime Commissioner.

Jill Eckersley, Housing Support and Development Executive, emphasizes, “Our model is not just about providing housing; it’s about fostering a sense of community and supporting individuals in their journey to independence. By integrating various support services, we’re addressing the root causes of homelessness and reducing crime rates, which is a testament to the positive impact we’re making in Derbyshire.”
