Matlock Music Society continues its exciting 2025/26 season with a concert on 28th November given by PIVA, the internationally acclaimed early music ensemble. Returning by popular demand, the group will help ease us into the Christmas spirit by celebrating the Yuletide season, performing seasonal music and songs from Tudor times.
Since forming in 2002, PIVA has become established as one of the UK’s leading early music ensembles specialising in the popular dance and ballad music of the late Renaissance. Their aim is to be faithful to the music of the period whilst adding their own innovative arrangements and interpretations. The group’s members are all multi-instrumentalists with backgrounds in renaissance, classical and traditional music, blending all these influences together to create music of the past played for today. Performing throughout the UK and Europe, they have gained a reputation for their lively and entertaining performances.
The programme is titled “The Winter Revels – Tudor Christmas Music and Celebrations” and will include music of the 16th century combined with winter tales. The music will be performed on reproduction instruments of the period including curtals, crumhorns, cornetts, viol, violin, guitar, recorders, rauschpfeifen, shawms, bagpipes and percussion, many of them made by the artistes themselves.
Recent comments on their performances have included, “The virtuosity of all the players was truly astounding”. “If you have a chance to hear them, jump at it!”. “Early music has never been such fun”. “They bring the music of the 16th century to life”.
Do come and join us for what promises to be an exciting evening of live, first-class seasonal music-making.
Future concerts in the 2025/26 season include violinist Charlotte Spruit on 6th February and members of the Sheffield Music Academy on 27th February. Details of the full season are given on the society’s website.
