Matlock Music’s 2025/2026 season continues on Friday 20th March with the much-anticipated return of the Wihan String Quartet of Prague, with Leoš Čepický and Jan Schulmeister (violins), Jakub Čepický (viola) and Michal Kaňka (cello). The quartet is one of the leading string quartets to emerge from the great Czech school of performance. The New York Times praised its deeply pleasurable and traditional sound and it was called one of the world’s finest chamber ensembles by BBC Music Magazine. International Record Review described them as one of the best quartets in the world today. Since its formation in 1985, there have been only two changes in personnel, leading to a remarkable and much-admired consistency. The quartet has performed extensively worldwide with tours across Europe (including the BBC Proms), the USA, East Asia and Australia.
Their programme will include Schubert’s Quartettsatz in C minor D 703, Dvořák’s Quartet no. 9 in D minor op 34 and Beethoven’s Quartet no 9 in C major op 59 no3, Rasumovsky.
The 2025/26 season continues with the award-winning guitarist Chris Godhard on 24th April. Details of the full season are given on the society’s website.
